Introduction

The theme of motherhood is one of the deepest and most universal in art. It covers all spheres of human life and is reflected in various types of creativity. One of the first examples of depicting motherhood is the Venus of Willendorf, belonging to the Magdalenian culture. In the Middle Ages, the image of the mother reached its apogee in images of the Madonna and the Virgin Mary. The cult of motherhood has always been and will be relevant, as this feeling is inexhaustible and requires various artistic approaches for its expression.

Photography, as the most modern and accessible form of art, also addresses the motif “Mother and Child”. However, unlike other art forms, photography has the unique ability to capture reality, giving it artistic value.

Genre Photography

One of the key principles in revealing the theme of motherhood is documentary. The photographer, following the principle of Henri Cartier-Bresson“I am not in this world”, does not interfere in the process, but only records the surrounding reality. This approach allows conveying the genuine emotions and states of the characters, which is especially important in genre photography.

Examples of Works by Photography Classics

Antanas Sutkus

On the pages of magazines “Soviet Photo” and “Special Review of Art Photography”, works of the photography classic — Antanas Sutkus — were regularly published. His portrait of a young woman (1968) conveys elusive sadness, and the image of a mother and child touching cheeks resembles the iconographic type “Eleusa” (Tenderness).

Sergey Vasiliev

In the 70s, photographer Sergey Vasiliev caused a sensation with his works dedicated to childbirth and the first moments of newborns’ lives. His shots, such as “In the Native Element” (1977), poeticize women, emphasizing their strength, tenderness, and chastity.

Today, the theme of motherhood continues to develop in photography. The organization IAPBP (International Association of Professional Birth Photographers) helps future parents choose a photographer who can capture the moment of the appearance of a new life from an artistic point of view.

Photo Contests

Every year the association holds the Birthphoto Competition, where works dedicated to childbirth and the first hours of babies’ lives are presented. The largest number of photographers is registered in the USA (500), while in Russia there are only two such specialists.

Criteria for Art Photography of Motherhood

In the course of the study, the following criteria were highlighted that a photograph revealing the theme of motherhood should meet:

  1. Humanism — conveying deep human feelings.
  2. Documentary — capturing real moments without staging.
  3. Aesthetics of the nude figure — emphasizing the natural beauty of the mother and child.
  4. Monochrome gamut — the absence of color enhances the emotionality of the frame and removes distracting details.

Conclusion

The theme of motherhood remains relevant in any era. Photography, as an art, allows capturing unique moments of life, conveying deep emotions and humanistic values. In the digital age, it is important not only to capture moments but also to create shots that have artistic value.
